Syllabus plan/Content: Life Cycle Assessments are used to identify and evaluate potential environmental effects of a product system. The analysis and evaluation takes into account the entire life cycle of a product, from resource extraction and processing, through production, use and disposal, including all transport processes. The methodological procedure is internationally standardised by ISO 14040 and ISO 14044.

The module is divided into 3 parts:

1) Theoretical aspects of Life Cycle Assessment
Methods of Life Cycle Assessment, including Life Cycle Inventory, Life Cycle Impact Assessment, interpretation and reporting, critical review

2) Introductory training for the LCA software umberto
Umberto is one of the leading LCA software solutions and is used to model material flow models and to perform impact assessments.

3) Application in an example case
The methodology of the Life Cycle Assessment is deepened with a concrete example.

Learning Goals
Subject-specific skills and competences: After successful participation in this module students are able to:

* define the terms life cycle assessment and life cycle assessment.
* deal with the requirements of relevant norms and standards (especially ISO 14001, ISO 14025, Product Category Rules) and apply them in their own models

* differentiate different types of impact assessment and assess their methodological suitability.

* to critically examine LCA studies and assess their methodological quality.
Generic competences (Personal and key skills): After successful participation in this module students are able to
independently analyse models and develop solutions.
