Syllabus plan/Content:
  • Contact theory: contact model according to Holm and pollution layer resistance, warming to contact, contact forms and materials
  • Switching arc: Static and dynamic arc, potential, ignition and extinguish of the AC and DC arc, transient behavior, re-ignition Mechanismen
  • Switching operations: turning on and off of short-circuit currents, long and short distance short circuit, phase opposition, switching off small inductive and capacitive currents
  • Low-Voltage Switchgear: application and requirements, (current limiting) circuit breakers, switch disconnectors, disconnectors, line proctection circuit breakers, RCD
  • fuses: current-time integral, melting time-current characteristics, current limiting, selectivity, backup protection
  • HV Switchgear: application and requirements, circuit breakers, extinguishing principles, switch actuators, multiple interruption, separating path, circuit breakers, disconnectors, earthing switches, special switchgear (OLTC, switches, HVDC switch)
  • Switchgear testing, Switchgear diagnosis
  • surge protection devices: application and requirements, arresters with spark gaps, metal oxide arrestors
  • switchgear: application and requirements, low, medium and high voltage Equipment

Subject-specific skills and competences:After completing the module, students are able to
  • Recognition of requirements and solutions for the contact (current path) and the ignition, control and extinguishing of the switching arc (as a switching element)
  • Understanding expertise on the structure and function of switching devices of the electric power supply
  • Knowledge about the basic selection and dimensioning guidelines for electric power switchgear
  • Understanding and preparing of self-doing of measurements in relation to switch function and switch diagnostics
