| Syllabus plan/Content: | The module enables students to learn the basic concepts of identification, description, modelling and experiment/simulation methodology with its applications in management of business & economic systems. It consists of the following parts: methodology of modelling (object-oriented, process-oriented, operations research, simulation/gaming concepts and methods), modelling techniques, experiments, verification, optimisation, interpretation of model results. The application part of the course includes survey of some modelling methods and software tools for business management. Lecture Content: 1. Introduction to business & economic systems modelling. Origins and background. 2. Introduction to BPM modelling. Business structure, effectiveness and competitiveness. 3. Application of modelling in business, economics and management. Case studies. 4. Fundamentals of modelling. Notions, objects, relations, functions, processes. 5. Methodology of quantitative and qualitative modelling. Simulation, OR, AI, BPM, BPR. 6. Continuous, discrete and hybrid simulation modelling. Examples of projects. 7. Simulation games. Management and decision games for business management. 8. Computer simulation languages and systems for BPM. Software and applications. 9. The concept of ARIS approach. The 5-element architecture, process life-cycle. 10. ARIS Product family. ARIS Toolset, ARIS Easy Design, ARIS ABC, ARIS Simulation. 11. Implementation of ARIS methodology. Planning, implementation, design, improvement. 12. Structured approach to enterprise modelling and analysis. IDEF family of methods. 13. Course summary - practical conclusions. |
| Learning Outcomes | |
| Subject-specific skills and competences: | The module enables students to learn the basic concepts of identification, modelling and experimenting (simulation) methodology with its applications in business systems. The aim of the seminar is to provide an opportunity to discuss basic methodology and problems of modelling for business systems management. During the seminar students present reports based on their research and studies (e.g. literature, web sites). The seminar is focused on the following topics: 1) basic approaches in business modelling; 2) systems thinking and systems analysis in business modelling; 3) application of OR, simulation, AI, BPM and BPR models in business, economics and management (paradigms, procedures, optimisations, analyses, examples); 4) basic problems of enterprise modelling, e.g. simplicity vs. complexity, deficiency vs. accuracy, uncertainty vs. certainty, small-scale vs. large-scale. The project course develops the quantitative and analytical skills necessary for successful business analysis. It is concerned with the following activities: 1) analysis in business systems by simulation experiments on models - from elementary to medium size models; 2) building and validation/verification of quantitative and BPM models for small and medium scale - simulation modelling methods (System Dynamics, discrete event and process simulation); 3) application of tools and systems for continuous simulation (ITHINK, VENSIM), discrete simulation (GPSS World, EXTEND, ARENA), BPM modelling (ARIS Tools), function modelling and activity analysis (AI0 Win) and some general application tools (EXCEL). |
